弘前大学農学生命科学部の原田竹雄教授らは、篩管輸送RNAシステムを利用して接ぎ木相手の遺伝子をサイレンシングする技術の実用化を進めている。青森県弘前地域特産のリンゴに続き、トマトでもこの手法が有効という成果を、2012年3月末に宇都宮市で開かれた日本育種学会第121回講演会で発表した。この技術で形質転換された植物には導入遺伝子が存在しないため、花粉飛散による組み換え遺伝子の漏出が問題にならないという利点がある。原田教授は2012年5月14日に日本学術会議講堂（東京・港）で開かれる日本学術会議公開シンポジウム「新しい遺伝子組み換え技術の開発と植物研究、植物育種への利用?研究開発と規制を巡る国内外の動向?」で、「植物の接ぎ木を利用した接ぎ木相手の形質転換」と題した講演を行う。
