2012年2月15日に前橋市で開催された公開シンポジウム「カイコ産業の未来?遺伝子組換えカイコによる医薬品開発を目指して?」で、農業生物資源研究所（生物研）遺伝子組換え研究センターの瀬筒秀樹・遺伝子組換えカイコ研究開発ユニット長は「遺伝子組換えカイコを用いた技術開発の現状と課題」と題した講演を、話題提供として行った。2000年に生物研の田村俊樹博士らがカイコにおける遺伝子組み換えの成功をNature Biotechnology誌に発表して以来、日本で組み換えシルクの開発や組み換えたんぱく質の生産系の開発が順調に進んできたことを紹介した。ただし、この数年間で中国や米国などで組み換えカイコの研究や事業化への取り組みが急速に進んでおり、危機感を覚えていることも話した。

アサヒグループホールディングスの和光堂は2012年2月17日、「アクアライト オーアールエス」について、病者用食品（個別評価型）の表示許可を消費者庁から取得した（関連記事1、関連記事2）。同社が05年10月に病医院・調剤薬局向け専売品として新発売した乳幼児用イオン飲料「アクアORS」について、新たに表示許可を取得したものとみられる。
