株式会社日立製作所は21日、人間共生ロボット「EMIEW2 (エミュー・ツー)」の探索・案内機能を開発したと発表して、デモンストレーションを行なった。探してほしいものの名前をロボットに尋ねると、ウェブ上のデータをもとに作成したデータベースを使ってモノを識別して、屋内に設置した複数台のネットワークカメラが撮影した画像からモノがある場所を探し出し、その場所まで通路や曲がり角でも速度を落とさず人を案内できる。

2012年2月15日に前橋市で開催された公開シンポジウム「カイコ産業の未来?遺伝子組換えカイコによる医薬品開発を目指して?」で、農業生物資源研究所（生物研）遺伝子組換え研究センターの瀬筒秀樹・遺伝子組換えカイコ研究開発ユニット長は「遺伝子組換えカイコを用いた技術開発の現状と課題」と題した講演を、話題提供として行った。2000年に生物研の田村俊樹博士らがカイコにおける遺伝子組み換えの成功をNature Biotechnology誌に発表して以来、日本で組み換えシルクの開発や組み換えたんぱく質の生産系の開発が順調に進んできたことを紹介した。ただし、この数年間で中国や米国などで組み換えカイコの研究や事業化への取り組みが急速に進んでおり、危機感を覚えていることも話した。
