公開シンポジウム「カイコ産業の未来?遺伝子組換えカイによる医薬品開発を目指して?」が2012年2月15日、前橋市の群馬県庁ビジターセンターで開催され、120人ほどが参加した。「遺伝子組換えカイコの大量飼育技術開発の現状と課題」と題した話題提供を行った群馬県蚕糸技術センターの小林初美所長は、2011年度は3回（2011年末と2012年1月から2月、同3月から4月）合計で6万頭の遺伝子組換えカイコが群馬で飼育される予定であり、2010年度の6000頭に比べ10倍に増えることを紹介した。
