▼葛西臨海水族館が無料開放の日。というわけで行って来た。けっこうな混雑だったが、それなりに楽しめた。水族館のなかで時間をつぶしすぎて、外の臨海公園の砂州に行けなかったのが残念。

サルの脳に電極を埋め込み、このサルに「仮想アーム（腕）」でコンピューター内にある仮想の物体を動かさせたり、その質感を触覚させることに成功したとの研究結果が、5日の英科学誌ネイチャー（Nature）に掲載された。研究が進めば、いずれは重度のまひがある人たちも、物に触れる世界を再び取り戻すことができるかもしれない。
神経生物学を専門とする米デューク大学（Duke University）のミゲル・ニコレリス（Miguel Nicolelis）教授率いる研究チームは、2匹のアカゲザルを用い、脳の両半球に複数の電極を埋め込んで実験を行った。
実験でサルたちは、コンピューター画面上に表示された3つの物体に触ろうと、脳の力だけで「仮想アーム」を操作した。
物体の1つには「表面」に触れた感覚をもたらす「触覚フィードバック」が備わっている ...
