クォークはグルーオンという粒子でやりとりされる「強い相互作用」で結びついている。1970年代に、理論物理学者ウィルチェックは「強い相互作用」が近距離では弱くなる性質「漸近的自由性」を発見し、後にノーベル物理学賞を受賞した。彼による著書 『 物質のすべては光 』 は、宇宙のありようと質量の起源についての本だ。
素粒子物理学や宇宙論がらみの本を読むと、物質や空間の正体とは何なのかと考えずにはいられない。考えれば考えるほど分からなくなるのだ。本書によれば質量とは、クォークの色荷によるグルーオン場の擾乱と、対を為すクォークと反クォークとの間の、量子力学的なせめぎあいから生まれるものだ。そして空間は空っぽの容れ物ではなく、著者らが「グリッド」と呼ぶ実体であり、むしろ物質のほうがその一側面に過ぎない。そして我々が暮らすこの宇宙は、ある種の超伝導体のようなものなのだという。
