約９５００人が安否不明の宮城県南三陸町で、奇跡的に一命を取り留めた佐藤仁町長（５９）が１４日、災害対策本部と避難所を兼ねる町内の体育館で記者会見した。町を壊滅させた津波のすさまじさを語り、「避難民の食料や水、毛布が圧倒的に足りない」と全国に支援を求めた。

町では４１人が犠牲になった１９６０年のチリ地震の津波を教訓に、毎年住民の避難訓練を続けてきた。ただ、想定した津波は当時の高さ５．５メートル。今回の波は高さ約１１メートルの庁舎を超えており、町長は「それだけの規模しか想定できなかった」とうつむいた。

▼震災から２日。壊滅的な被害の状況を捉えた衛星画像なども出て来た。また被災者の方々の今の姿も徐々に報じられ始めた。
▼ただ一方で被害が報じられる地域が限定されているという声も。被災地域が広く、マスコミもカバーしきれなくなっている。

▼今回の地震の規模はマグニチュード8.8から9.0に修整された。M9.0は8.8の２倍のエネルギー。オーストラリアでの観測波形を詳しく解析した結果、今回の地震は通常の地震の破壊と違って連続して複雑なかたちで破壊が起きたことが分かったという。宮城沖から茨城沖まで南北500km，東西200kmの範囲で５分以上にわたり、北から南に向けておおむね３段階で破壊が起きた。このことから8.8から9.0へと修整した、と 気象庁から発表があった 。断層面積が桁違いに大きく、そのぶん余震も桁違いに多い。
