男性は３０年以上前から有機栽培にこだわり、自作の腐葉土などで土壌改良を重ねてきた。キャベツは１０年近くかけて種のまき方などを工夫し、この地域では育てられなかった高品質の種類の生産にも成功。農協でも人気が高く、地元の小学校の給食に使うキャベツも一手に引き受けていた。「子どもたちが食べるものなのだから、気をつけて作らないと」。そう言って、安全な野菜づくりを誇りにしていたという。
