大陸と海洋底の運動が山を作り、火山を生み、地震を起こすきっかけとなる。地球が冷えるに連れて生まれた対流運動の結果、今日の地球がある。今も雄大な時間スケールで地球は動いている。
地学を学ぶ機会は少ないかもしれない。だが、地球科学は非常に面白い分野だ。この本に書いてあるのは皆さんの教科書にも書いてあるようなことだが、最新の研究成果に近い。最新の研究成果がすぐに教科書にも反映される。これは他の理科にはない特徴だ。
他にも、科学の本を読むときのちょっとしたコツや、研究においてどこに目をつけるべきか、疑問に抱くべきポイントはどこかといったことも解説されている。理系の考え方を学ぶこともできる一冊だ。著者は火山学者。

アリは身近な昆虫だが、世界にはいろいろな種類のアリがいる。イネばかり食べるアリもいれば、肉食専門のアリもいる。体を蜜の貯蔵タンクにしてしまうアリもいれば、中には敵をやっつけるため腹を膨らませて飛び散って特攻するアリまでいる。
この本はアリの生態の研究者によるアリの本だ。アリには無限の謎があると著者は語る。たとえばアリは社会性の昆虫だ。働きアリは自分では子供を生まず、巣のために働く。なぜそんな行動が進化したのか？ アリを通して研究の考え方だけではなく、研究者とはどういう存在で、ふだん何をしているのかも分かる一冊だ。
